On the way a happy accident occurred as I started working on the piece “Haze”, the first of the series. I combined various layers in Photoshop on top of the ink textures and the colours just began glowing.
I fell in love with the fluorescent effect and it’s something that I didn’t initially plan on achieving looking back at my original sketches. The effect reminded me of spilled petrol that you sometimes see on the roads.
For the series I used biro, inks, watercolours and various paper textures. Old paper textures can add a lot of interesting details in the pieces. After drawing the base of the composition I would scan the piece and make digital adjustments in Photoshop by overlaying different colours and gradients on top of the textures.

"A SPirit in the darkness"
As I continued working on the series, my pieces began getting darker and darker - I wanted to experiment with how the colours created contrast with the dark background. In additon, I wanted to open up to more colour schemes, for the first few pieces I worked in a more rainbow colour scheme, then I began using more hues of blues and violets.
Before and after of "Awaken"
It was very important for me to create a story within the characters, I wanted them to seem fragile, yet fierce at the same time and I wanted to achieve this effect predominantly with colour – the colours leading their journey and spirit, giving them a sense of hope and acting as a protective shield from negativity. This can be interpreted in many ways, depending on your life experiences. For me getting bullied was a big part of my life, finding hope and happiness in the smallest things let me continue being myself, I definitely wanted to express this connection of emotions while working on the series.
